The following is an official statement from Dr. Joseph B. Fuiten, in response to President Obama's Executive Order Lifting the Ban on Embryonic Stem Cell Research:

Immoral and Ineffective Science Reflected in Executive Order

Many humans will not draw their first breath because of the immoral action taken by the President today.
Human embryos will be destroyed by subjecting them to "research."  Embryonic stem cell research has not cured anything and has no current human trials simply because the method produces tumors.

Adult stem cell research has generated seventy-eight cures and treatments for all kinds of diseases.  As a result, there are 1200 human clinical trials currently underway.  Besides the success, it is relatively affordable.

The President has taken the good results that are being obtained by scientifically valuable adult stem cell research and claiming it for unproductive but ideologically driven embryonic stem cell research. The Executive Order is scientifically confused and morally deficient. It confuses the good of adult stem cells with the tumors of embryonic stem cells.

Federal funding of embryo destruction is prohibited by Congressional action.  An executive order cannot bypass Congress.  I noted that the current Executive Order had lots of qualifiers. They are looking to establish "guidelines."  The work has to be "responsible" and "scientifically worthy."  And it can only be to the "extent permitted by law."  ("...the Director of NIH is instructed to develop guidelines for the support and conduct of responsible, scientifically worthy human stem cell research, including human embryonic stem cell research, to the extent permitted by law.")

The President said "But in recent years, when it comes to stem cell research, rather than furthering discovery, our government has forced what I believe is a false choice between sound science and moral values. In this case, I believe the two are not inconsistent."  Sound science would dictate that tumor-producing embryos not be used.  Moral values would dictate that moral good cannot come out of the destruction of humans in an early stage of their development.

The only thing that embryos can do that other stem cells can't is human cloning.  There does not appear to be any justification for embryonic destruction for research other than to pay off pro-abortion forces who helped elect this president.
